What to Do If Your Parents Are Divorced

Hey, Awesome Teen!  Divorce is not a fun topic, especially if it hits close to home. So, today we're going to talk about what to do if your parents have divorced.

Most likely, your parents' divorce made you deeply sad, or angry, or resentful, or conflicted, or confused, or cynical of marriage--or all of the above. One thing it certainly didn't do is make you happy.  At least, not in the long run. You may have felt relieved that the arguing was over, but deep down, your heart was grieved.

Divorce is not what God intended for a marriage. And just because your parents got divorced doesn't mean you will get divorced. In fact, you can learn some very important lessons from your parents' divorce that will help you make your own marriage strong and lasting when the time comes for you to be married.

So, here are some things that will help you handle your parents' divorce:

1) Talk to God about all of your feelings. And I mean ALL of your feelings. Why? Well, first of all, because God already knows how you feel about your parents' divorce, and second, God loves it when you vent to Him. Yes, vent!

The Psalmist David in the Bible was one of the best venters I know. He poured out his heart to God. He told God when he was sad, when he was afraid, and when he was confused. He even let God know it when he was angry with Him.

This is one of the reasons God called David "a man after His own heart." You see, David was real with God. He was honest and transparent with Him.

2) Forgive your parents for getting a divorce. Forgiving those who hurt us is, perhaps, the most important thing you can do in life. You see, bitterness will keep you a prisoner to your hurt, while forgiveness will free you from your hurt.

3)  Pray for your parents. If they do not know Jesus, pray that they will come to know Him. If they do know Him, pray that He will heal them of the hurt they, too, have suffered from the divorce.

4) Ask God to give you wisdom when the time comes to choose your own husband. God says that He will gladly and generously give us wisdom. All we have to do is ask Him for it (James 1: 5).

5) Pray for your future spouse. It is not too soon to start praying for the person God wants you to marry. Pray that he or she will love and follow Jesus. Pray that he or she will be a good spouse to you and a good parent to the children God will give you.

Remember: the past does not equal the future. Just because your parents got divorced does not mean you will get divorced. So, don't be afraid to get married. Just be sure that you marry the person God chooses for you.

What, in your opinion, should a married couple do to avoid divorce? Please post your answers in the comment box below. Thanks!

How to Keep Your Cool When Someone Offends You

Jesus said that offenses would come (Luke 17: 1). So how do we handle them when they do come?

First of all, let's define what we mean by an offense. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, an offense is "the state of being insulted or morally outraged." Another online dictionary defines offense as "annoyance or resentment brought about by a perceived insult to or disregard for oneself or one's standards or principles."

Offense occurs, therefore, when someone says or does something that insults us or outrages us. When we are offended, our natural reaction is to strike back, to seek revenge, to punish the offender.

But God's way of dealing with offense is the exact opposite. He commands us to respond to offense with love.

Offense is a tool of Satan to get us off track in our walk with Christ. How you respond to offense is extremely important. Here are some ways to make sure that you do not fall into the trap of offense:

1- Give every offense to God. This includes giving him the hurt that the offense caused in your soul.

2-Do not seek revenge for the offense. God says this in Romans 12: 19: "Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, 'I will take revenge; I will pay them back,' says the LORD.

3-Forgive the person who offended you (Matthew 6: 14). Since God forgave us, we must forgive others. If we do not forgive those who offend us, God will not forgive us of our sins. This is a very sobering truth.

4-Pray for the person who offended you (Romans 12: 14). By doing so, you will be returning good for evil.

The next time someone offends you, apply the four principles listed above. As you do, you will be freed from the hurt that the offense caused you. Instead, you will be filled with the joy and peace of Jesus Christ.

And there is nothing better than that! :)

NOW IT'S YOUR TURN: What do you do when someone offends you? Please leave a comment in the box below.
