How to Know What to Do with Your Life

Hey, Awesome Teen!

Have you figured out yet what you're going to be "when you grow up"?  I write those last words with the full knowledge that you are almost all grown up and have some very important choices to make.

Consider this: In the next five to fifteen years--depending on your current age--you will need to decide what profession to pursue, what college to attend (or not attend--depending on your career choice), and what person to marry if you decide to get married.

All of these big decisions involve a lot of smaller ones: like, should I go to a four-year college or should I start at a community college, aka two-year college? Or should I go to college at all?

If I do go to college, how am I going to pay for it? And do I want to spend half my life paying off my college loans?  If I don't go to college, what should I do to earn a living?

Regarding marriage, you will face these questions: Should I get married or should I stay singleIf I do get married, whom should I marry?  How will I recognize my spouse? If I stay single, what
does God want me to do with the life He has given me?

With so many possible paths to take, what's a teen to do?

Here is a suggestion:  Ask the Holy Spirit what to do.

After Jesus returned to Heaven, He sent His Holy Spirit to lead us and guide us into all truth. This means that as you seek the Holy Spirit, He will give you wisdom and direction to make the right choices for your life.

Bottom line, there are only two things we need to do in life:

1) Hear the voice of the Holy Spirit; and
2) Obey His voice.

If you learn how to do these two things, you will never make a wrong decision in your life.

Does Your Life Matter?

Hey, Awesome Teen!

Here in the United States, there have been a lot of sayings going around regarding the value of one's life, sayings like "Black lives matter," and "Blue lives matter" (referring to police officers who usually dress in blue uniforms).  The missing word in these sayings is the word too or also.  What these sayings imply is that black lives matter also and blue lives matter also.

The truth is that EVERY LIFE MATTERS, including YOURS!

Unfortunately, the value of life has been diminished by Darwin's theory of evoluton, which, by the way, is only a theory.  In fact, the more and more we learn about science, the less and less does the theory of evolution hold water. The reason is that it is simply not true.

The truth is that you were created by God Who loves you and Who created you for a speciic purpose. The fact that God created you gives you value, and the fact that God created you with a specific purpose gives meaning to your life.

But how can you know what your purpose is? There is only one way: by accepting Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord. Why? Because your purpose is all wrapped up in Jesus. Until you discover Jesus, you will never discover your purpose.

So, when you wonder if your life matters, be assured that it does. And it matters greatly! God has placed you on this earth at this particular time in history because your purpose is directly related to His plan for this particular time in history.

Ask God to show you His purpose for your life. He will.  As you fulfill your purpose, you will experience great joy and you will benefit humanity at the same time.

NOTE: For a great book on discovering your life purpose, read THE SEARCH FOR SIGNIFICANCE by Robert McGee.  This book is available through my Amazon Affiliate Link.

NOW IT'S YOUR TURN: Have you discovered your life purpose? Why do you think it is important to discover your life purpose?

Why Am I Here?

Hey, Awesome Teen,

Last week we discussed the first of the three great questions of life: Who am I?  We learned that we are creatures made in the image of God and that we have great value and worth. If you missed last week’s post, you can find it here.

Today we’re going to discuss the second This week, we'll look at the second great question of life: Why am I here?

Have you ever wondered why you are on this earth? Have you ever felt that you just happened by chance and that your appearance on earth is random? If so, let me show you the truth.

In Psalm 139: 16 God says that the days of your life were all prepared by Him before you ever lived a single day of them. Do you realize what that means? It means that God created you for a specific purpose and He planned out that purpose even before you were born! Is that amazing or what!

So, the truth is that you are here for a special purpose. What is that purpose?

To discover your purpose, you will need to get to know Jesus Christ. Why? Because He created you and He knows the purpose for which He created you. As a result, He will lead you into that purpose.

So to discover why you are here, discover Jesus Christ. If you already know Him, ask Him what your purpose is. If you don’t already know Him, pray this simple prayer:

Lord Jesus, I want to get to know You. Come into my life. I receive You as my Savior and Lord. Show me the purpose for which You created me. Amen.

If you prayed this prayer, please write to me at drmaryann@maryanndiorio.com to let me know. I will send you a little booklet that will help you get to know Jesus better.  You may also leave a comment in the box below.

Do you have any questions or comments about Life Question Two? If so, please share your thoughts in the comment box below. Thanks! :)

Making the New Year Your Best Yet

Hey, Gabriel Girls!

Happy New Year! If you're like me, you want to make 2018 your best year yet. So, how can we do that?

Well, here are a few thoughts followed by some ideas for action:

1--Time is a gift from God. How we use the time He gives us on this earth will affect how we live in eternity. It has been said that our life on earth is a preparation for our life in eternity. Did you know that before you were even born, God had written down what He wanted you to do each day of your life?

Check out this cool Scripture verse: "You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed" (Psalm 139: 16). WOW! Talk about planning ahead!

ACTION QUESTIONS:

  • Am I doing what God planned for me to do each day?
  • Do I know what God planned for me to do each day?
  • If not, how can I find out?
2--Obedience to God's Word will lead me into God's will for my life. God's ways are opposite our ways. We may think we have to know the next step before we take it. God says, "Obey My Word, and I will show you the next step to take."

In order to obey God's Word, we have to know it. We have to read it and study it. As we read and study God's Word, we then need to obey it by applying it to our lives. Make it your goal in 2018 to study and obey God's Word. As you do, you will begin to see God's purpose for your life unfolding.

ACTION QUESTIONS:
  • Am I reading and studying God's Word every day? If not, why not?
  • Am I obeying God's Word? If not, why not?
  • Am I beginning to discern God's purpose for my life?
3--My relationship with Jesus Christ must take first place above all of my other relationships. God created us for relationship with Him. When our relationship with God is right, then all of our other relationships will be right.

Jesus Christ is the only way for us to have a relationship with God the Father. So, all relationship with God must start with Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself said, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14: 6).

ACTION QUESTIONS:
  • Have you established a relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ? If not, you can do so now. Click here if you need help.
  • If you do have a relationship with God through Jesus, is that relationship top priority in your life? If not, why not?
  • What can you do to improve your relationship with God?
Set aside some time to think about this post and to answer the questions. If you do, you will be starting the new year on the right foot.

And that's a good way to start!

A Girl Has Gotta Have a Dream!

Hey, Gabriel Girls!

Do you have a dream? A big dream? If not, it's time to get one.

Why is it important to have a dream? Because God said in the Bible that a person without a dream will die (Proverbs 29: 18). Not die physically, necessarily, but die spiritually, emotionally, and psychologically.

WOW! That is serious stuff!

What is a dream? A dream is a revelation from God that usually comes in the form of a burning desire to be or to do something.  For example, many years ago, I had a burning desire to be a writer, so I became a writer. I have a burning desire to be like Jesus, so I am becoming more and more like Jesus.

Where do dreams come from? They come from God. They are God's gift to you to inspire you to fulfill His purposes in the earth.

Some dreams, however, are not from God but from our own selfish ambition. It is important to know the difference.

How can you know if a dream is from God or from your own selfish desires?  Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

1--Will my dream glorify God? Will it make Him famous instead of making me famous?

2--Will my dream help other people, or will it benefit only me?

3--Is my dream beyond my human ability to achieve? In other words, do I need a miracle from God to achieve my dream?

If you can answer yes to these three questions, then your dream is from God.

But what if you don't have a dream? What should you do?

Simple. Ask God to give you His dream for your life. Then keep your eyes open as He answers your request.

Dreams are the stuff of life. Dreams will keep you young. Dreams will keep you happy. Dreams will help you to change the world for Jesus.

Go get a dream! :)

Lollipops and Lima Beans: Living an Uncompromising Life

Hey, Gabriel Girls!

Lima beans are one of my favorite vegetables. Especially drenched in melted butter.

Lollipops, on the other hand, I could take or leave.

When my children were small, their pediatrician would give them a lollipop each time we visited. That would most likely be unheard of nowadays.

A lot of things we did back then would be unheard of nowadays. But this is not unusual. Things change as time goes by.

But there are some things that never change. Those things are the intangibles, the values and principles that guide our lives.

The matters of the heart.

The Bible says that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8), and that God never changes (Malachi 3:6).  This means that His commandments never change, either.

So, how does all of this apply to you? It is your responsibility as a child of God to understand the difference between the things that never change and the things that do. Then it is your responsibility as a child of God to uphold the things that never change and to do so without compromise.

How can you do this? By deciding today what you will do in the face of temptation.

For example, if your boyfriend asks you to have sex before marriage, what will you do? Ask yourself that question now, and determine that you will obey God’s Word that commands you to wait until marriage before engaging in sex. If you don’t make this decision before the temptation hits you, you may have trouble making it when the temptation hits you.

Daniel was a young man who faced many temptations. But way before he faced any of them, he had already purposed in his heart to obey God (Daniel 1:8).

Before you do anything else today, purpose in your heart that you will obey God no matter what temptation comes your way. Then, when the temptation comes, as it surely will, you will already know what to do.
